Storms with high winds and possible tornadoes are expected in our area today. Out of caution, Seven Hills Family Medicine will close our physical office at noon and continue seeing patients virtually this afternoon.

Weather events like this are stressful, especially when you have kids, pets, or medical needs at home. While the weather itself is out of our control, there are a few simple steps that can help keep you and your family safer.

1. Stay Away from Windows

High winds turn everyday objects into projectiles. If a tornado warning or severe storm hits:

  • Move to an interior room

  • Choose a basement if available

  • Otherwise pick a small interior room like a bathroom or hallway

  • Stay away from windows and glass doors

2. Protect Your Head and Neck

Most injuries during tornadoes and severe storms come from flying debris.

If sheltering:

  • Get low to the ground

  • Cover your head and neck with your arms

  • A helmet, bike helmet, or thick blanket can add protection, especially for kids

3. Wear Real Shoes

This sounds small, but it matters.

If there is damage after a storm, the ground may be covered in glass, nails, or debris. Wearing closed-toe shoes reduces the chance of injuries when moving around afterward.

4. Keep Your Phone Charged

Power outages are common during high wind events.

Try to:

  • Charge your phone ahead of time

  • Keep a flashlight nearby

  • Avoid using candles if possible

5. Check on Vulnerable Neighbors

If it is safe to do so, consider checking on:

  • Elderly neighbors

  • People with mobility issues

  • Families who may need help getting supplies

A quick text or knock on the door can make a big difference.

6. Call — Don’t Message — for Urgent Medical Needs

If something comes up today that needs same-day medical attention, please call the office. Messaging systems may be slower during weather events or power outages.

Our team will continue caring for patients virtually this afternoon.

Stay safe out there, Richmond.— The Seven Hills Family Medicine Team
