When the Law Fails, Love Must Step In

It’s hard to see the path forward when your heart is broken.
Today’s Supreme Court decision left us devastated. And if you’re feeling confused, conflicted, or just overwhelmed—you’re not alone. Maybe you're still sorting through how you feel. Maybe you're trying to understand what it means for kids, for families, for your community. That’s okay. Start there. Start with what you know.
Start with love.
Because at the end of the day, most of us want the same thing: for our children to grow up healthy, safe, and loved. To be able to explore who they are and know they’ll be accepted. To live long enough to become adults, to chase joy, to belong.
But this ruling makes that harder for some of the most vulnerable kids in our country. It tells them they don’t count. That their pain is up for debate. That their lives are political pawns.
And that is not okay.

Let’s be honest about what just happened.
The Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law banning gender-affirming care for trans youth, despite overwhelming medical evidence and expert consensus that this care is safe, effective, and essential.
We’re not legal scholars. But we are medical professionals. And we can say with absolute clarity: these bans are built on junk science and deliberate misinformation. They ignore decades of research and the lived experience of trans youth and their families.
Every major medical organization—from the American Academy of Pediatrics to the Endocrine Society—supports the provision of gender-affirming care. The evidence is strong, and the results are clear: gender-affirming care saves lives.
What gender-affirming care really means
For the families we serve, this care isn’t abstract. It’s not ideological. It’s personal. It’s lifesaving.
It means:
Kids who can go to school without panic attacks.
Teens who can recognize themselves in the mirror without despair.
Parents who can focus on homework and dinner and screen time—not hospital stays or suicide watch.
The care we provide lets kids be kids.It gives them the space and support they need to thrive. It restores peace, autonomy, and possibility to families caught in fear.
What we’re doing at Seven Hills Family Medicine
At Seven Hills, we are proud to care for trans and gender-diverse youth from across Virginia—and from states as far away as Florida and Louisiana, where bans have made access nearly impossible.
With support from partners like the Campaign for Southern Equality and He She Ze and We, we’re able to offer financial assistance and help families travel safely to access the care their children need.
We are not backing down.We will continue to show up for our patients with moral clarity, medical integrity, and fierce love for our community.
What you can do
If you’re feeling heartbroken, outraged, or just unsure where to begin—here are a few small, meaningful steps:
— Donate to organizations like Campaign for Southern Equality and He She Ze and We who help families access care, travel safely, and find hope.
— Talk about it. Even a quiet “I believe these kids deserve safety” can shift hearts.
— Support local clinics like ours that are continuing to offer gender-affirming care in a hostile legal environment.
— Vote for leaders who respect science, dignity, and bodily autonomy—for everyone.
Because when the law fails, we are called to do what is right.
These kids deserve better than fear. They deserve better than politics. They deserve to be seen, supported, and loved.
And we’ll be right here—making sure they are.
